Chinese Herbal Therapy
top

While the primary focus of the Musicians’ Acupuncture Project is providing acupuncture care, we may recommend concurrent Chinese herbal therapy for some patients if we believe their condition will improve more readily with both.

The origins of Chinese herbal medicine date back at least 2,000 years. Since that time Chinese physicians have systematically experimented with and classified more than 5,000 plant, animal and mineral substances according to their medicinal effect. Approximately 500 of the most commonly used herbs are available in the U.S.

Traditional herbal formulas can be an important adjunct to acupuncture treatment. Herbal formulas are combinations of 2 to 15 herbs that are designed to treat specific conditions. The range of disorders that can be treated with herbal formulas includes pain, respiratory and throat problems, emotional imbalances, digestive problems, gynecologic and genitourinary disorders, dermatologic problems as well as many other conditions.

MAP acupuncturists receive extensive training in Chinese herbal medicine during their 4-year Master’s program in Traditional Chinese Medicine, and are professionally qualified to recommend both internal and external Chinese herbal remedies to patients.

Herb Safety and Purity

Herbal formulas are gentle yet potent. Unlike pharmaceutical drugs, adverse effects from properly used Chinese medicinal herbs are very rare.

Our priorities in selecting herbal products are efficacy, quality and purity. We purchase herbs from providers with Good Manufacturing Practices (GMP) status. To ensure quality and purity, the MAP clinic stocks only herbal remedies that are tested for harmful adulterants such as bacteria, heavy metals and pesticides.

We support the environmentally responsible use of Chinese herbs. We stock no products containing endangered plant or animal species.

Herbal Products for Internal Use

Most of the herbal formulas available in the MAP clinic are for internal use. Many are available in capsule or pill form.

Sometimes it is necessary to customize an herbal formula to an individual patient’s condition. We will advise you if we believe your condition will respond more readily to a customized herbal formula, and may schedule a separate appointment to discuss the reason for our recommendation, the form of herbal therapy most appropriate for you (granules, tinctures, decoctions of raw herbs, etc.) and anticipated costs.

Herbal Products for External Use

Stemming from the tradition of martial arts medicine there are many herbal remedies for external use, particularly for addressing musculo-skeletal pain. Discuss with your MAP acupuncturist if one of the following may be appropriate for you.

Dr. Shir’s Liniment
This liniment contains herbs that have been used for generations in China to help relieve pain and swelling of the muscles, tendons and joints caused by sprains, strains and repetitive use.
Instructions for Use: Lightly massage Dr. Shir’s Liniment into the effected area. Continue adding liniment to keep the region moist as you rub for 10 to 15 minutes. Apply 1 to 3 times per day. Do not apply to open wounds.

Herbal Soak / Compresses
Herbal Soak / Compresses are more labor intensive than Dr. Shir’s Liniment, but provide stronger relief, especially for pain that improves with heat. Before requesting an Herbal Compress, please read the
